Precision

We have simplified the daunting task of choosing the right tool to measure ingredients when blending or composing a perfume formula for you. We have the level of precision required, and why the meticulous process of weighing each ingredient is vastly superior to counting drops. hink of your scale as your most trusted assistant in the laboratory. Its reliability directly impacts the quality and consistency of your creations. When selecting a scale, there are two primary factors to consider: capacity and readability.

Capacity

This refers to the maximum weight your scale can measure. For a budding perfumer who is creating small trial batches, a scale with a maximum capacity of around 100 grams is generally sufficient. This will allow you to comfortably work on formulations without the limitation of a scale that tops out too early, which can be frustrating when you're in the creative flow.

Readability and Precision

This is arguably the most critical feature for a perfumer. Readability is the smallest increment the scale can display. For perfumery, you will need a scale with a readability of at least 0.01 grams (or 10 milligrams). However, we strongly recommend investing in a scale with a readability of 0.001 grams (or 1 milligrams) because one drop of liquid from a pipette can be anywhere between 1 to 20 milligrams. This high level of precision is essential because many modern aroma chemicals are incredibly powerful, and even a minuscule difference in quantity can dramatically alter your fragrance's character. A scale with 0.001g (1mg) readability ensures that you can accurately measure even the most potent materials.

It is also important to understand the distinction between readability and accuracy. While readability refers to how detailed the measurement is on the display, accuracy is how close that measurement is to the true value. A good quality scale will provide both high readability and high accuracy. For our purposes, a scale that reads to 0.001g will generally provide the precision we need.

The Inaccuracy of the Drop: Why We Weigh Everything

Now, let's address a common misconception among beginners: the idea of using drops as a unit of measurement. While it might seem convenient for initial experiments, it is a practice we must discard to become professional perfumers. Here is why composing a formula by weighing each ingredient is the only acceptable method in professional perfumery:

Inconsistent Drop Size

The size and weight of a drop are not constant. They vary significantly depending on several factors:

  • Viscosity: A thick, viscous material like vetiver will produce a much larger and heavier drop than a thin, less viscous one like bergamot.
  • Density: Different materials have different densities, meaning the same volume (and therefore, the same size drop) can have a different weight.
  • Equipment: The size of the opening on the dropper or pipette you are using will affect the size of the drop.
  • Technique: The angle at which you hold the pipette and the pressure you apply are nearly impossible to replicate perfectly every time.

Lack of Reproducibility and Scalability

Because of the inconsistencies mentioned above, a formula created using drops cannot be reliably reproduced. What you create one day will not be the exact same the next. Furthermore, imagine trying to scale up a formula from a small trial to a larger batch for production. You cannot simply multiply the number of drops; it would be a chaotic and inaccurate process. Weight, on the other hand, is an absolute measure, allowing for precise scaling of your formulas.

In essence, weighing each ingredient is about control, precision, and consistency – the hallmarks of a professional perfumer. It allows you to create a formula that is not only beautiful but also reproducible, scalable, and safe.

We encourage you to embrace the discipline of weighing from the very beginning of your studies. It will become an indispensable part of your creative process and the key to unlocking your full potential as a perfumer.
